Best Kept Villages

Vale of Glamorgan Best Kept Village Competition

Villages and community groups in the Vale of Glamorgan are invited each year to enter the Best Kept Village Competition. This competition is an excellent opportunity to bring communities together while at the same time improving the appearance of an area. The judges look for community effort, well-maintained grass verges, an absence of litter and rubbish, flower and vegetable gardens and allotments and give bonus marks for the general appearance of the village or area.  There is a particular category for a "Special Feature", which hopefully will encourage community centres, pubs etc. to enter the competition.

The top five winning villages all receive cash prizes

Gileston "special feature"  2012

First Prize:            £500

Second Prize:        £350

Third Prize:           £200

Fourth Prize:         £100

Preliminary judging begins towards the end of June with the final judging usually the first week in July.  The winners are announced at an awards evening in July.  The overall winner will receive an engraved brass plaque which they keep, as well as a prestigious silver cup to retain for one year. Over the last few years Ffos Las Racecourse has kindly sponsored the competition by donating to the winners a day out for four people at the racecourse, which includes a meal in their top restaurant.

Members of the Best Kept Village Competition Committee are part of the preliminary judging and each year an independent Chief Judge is appointed for the final judging.

Schools Competition

Entries are also invited from schools who care for a garden area such as a flower garden, woodland area, vegetable patch or courtyard etc.  There are two categories  A) Primary Schools: Age 6-11 years and Special Needs Schools and B) Nursery Schools: Age 5 and under.

The Best Kept Village Competition is sponsored by Cemex, the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Town and Community Councils, Dyffryn Gardens and Ffos Las Racecourse and Conference Centre.
